Score interpretation

0–5Low likelihood, few autistic traits indicated
6–10Possible autistic traits, further evaluation recommended
The AQ-10 (Allison et al., 2012) has a sensitivity of approximately 88% and specificity of 91% for identifying autistic adults in the general population. A score of ≥6 warrants further investigation. This screening is not a diagnosis, only a comprehensive psychological assessment can determine whether an autism diagnosis is appropriate.

Screening vs. diagnosis

The AQ-10 is a first-step screening tool. It identifies who might benefit from a more thorough evaluation, it cannot confirm or rule out autism.

A score below 6 doesn't mean autism isn't present, particularly for people who have spent years masking or who have developed strong compensatory strategies. And a score of 6 or above is a flag, not a verdict.

Score of 6 or above

The AQ-10 clinical cutoff of ≥6 suggests autistic traits at a level worth exploring further. A comprehensive assessment is the appropriate next step, not a source of anxiety, but of clarity.

Score below 6

Most people who score below 6 do not have a clinical level of autistic traits. If you still have significant concerns, especially if you have been a strong social compensator, a conversation with an evaluator can still be worthwhile.

Why a full assessment matters

A comprehensive autism evaluation includes clinical interview, cognitive testing, and detailed history, giving a much richer, more accurate picture than any screening can provide.

A screening asks the question. Assessment gives the answer.

If your results suggest autistic traits worth exploring, Dr. Claney offers comprehensive psychological evaluations for adults, including high-masking presentations that are often missed elsewhere. Schedule a free consultation to learn more.
