LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy

Your identity is not a problem to be solved. It is a dimension of your full self, one that deserves space, curiosity, and genuine understanding, not management.

Affirming therapy means more than a therapist who is tolerant of LGBTQIA+ identities. It means clinical competence with queer experiences: an understanding of the particular stressors that come with minority identity, the ways that internalized shame develops and operates, the unique grief of family rejection, and the specific textures of coming out at different life stages. Dr. Claney brings both professional training and genuine investment to this work.

Clients come here navigating a wide range of experiences: coming out for the first time in adulthood, processing the complex aftermath of family rejection, exploring gender identity or considering transition, untangling queerness from a religious upbringing, navigating relationship structures outside the mainstream, and working with the fatigue that comes from living in a world not built for you. These are not marginal concerns, they are central to a person’s inner life and deserve a central place in therapy.

Many LGBTQIA+ clients are also neurodivergent, and this intersection, the double experience of not-quite-fitting, of developing sophisticated strategies to pass in environments that were not designed for you, is a particularly rich area to explore. The experience of masking a neurodivergent identity and masking a queer identity often rhyme in meaningful ways, and working with both together can accelerate understanding considerably.

What people ask about this work

Do I need to be out to start therapy with you?

No. Therapy is a confidential space, and how out you are to others in your life has no bearing on what you can explore here. Many clients begin therapy while still in the process of figuring out their identity, and that uncertainty is exactly the kind of thing therapy can help with.

Can you help with gender identity exploration?

Yes. Exploring gender identity, whether you are questioning, non-binary, transgender, or somewhere still taking shape, is something therapy can support in a thoughtful, unhurried way. Dr. Claney does not have a predetermined destination in mind and won’t push toward or away from any particular identity or medical pathway.

I grew up in a religious environment and am struggling with my queerness. Can therapy help?

This is one of the most common and meaningful presentations in this practice. The grief of being queer in a tradition that did not have room for you, or the complicated mourning of leaving a faith that once organized your entire world, is real and deserves careful attention. Dr. Claney holds both the religious and queer dimensions of this experience with genuine curiosity and without a predetermined framework.

Do you work with relationship structures outside the mainstream?

Yes. Whether you are navigating polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, relationship anarchy, or simply questioning the assumptions of conventional relationship structures, that exploration is welcome in therapy here. Dr. Claney does not treat non-normative relationship structures as problems to solve.
